When to Ask for Ultrasound or Endoscopy

Dr. Miller will work with your veterinarian to rapidly diagnose and treat the injuries and illnesses of your dog, cat or ferret through the use of the latest non-invasive and minimally invasive medicine techniques. Understanding what these methods are can give pet owners a powerful advantage in decision-making when faced with an emergency.

The goal of minimally invasive medicine is to reduce tissue trauma and the body's response to injury. Traditional surgery requires long incisions and the stretching of incisions with retractors. Minimally invasive medicine results in decreased recovery time, small or no incisions, decreased discomfort, decreased hospital time, decreased procedure time, decreased incidence of post-procedure complications, decreased stress to the patient and decreased costs for the pet owner.

Swallowed foreign objects in the stomach are an example of a common problem in small animals. With minimally invasive technique, the object is removed with an endoscope passed through the mouth and into the stomach to locate and remove the object. Instead of surgery and several days spent in the hospital recovering, this patient is home the same day, ready to eat and play, completely recovered without pain and without the risks of infection and bleeding associated with surgical removal.

An ultrasound exam is another minimally invasive technology that gives the pet owner and the veterinarian great deal of information about the patient quickly, safely and without the need for surgery. Ultrasound can help your veterinarian diagnose quickly, saving time, costs, stress and, most importantly, lives.
